Call for ceasefire, ensure human rights amid COVID19
IID and other groups strongly urge the Member-States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to heed the call of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres for immediate global ceasefire in active armed conflicts in all parts of the world, in order to focus on the fight against the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

Urgent appeal to all states to help Rohingya refugees amid COVID-19 pandemic

As the whole of humanity continue to scramble to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of Rohingya refugees are left stranded at sea in the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, with some countries reportedly pushing the refugees away as governments continue to implement emergency restrictions on border controls and nationwide lockdown policies.

About IID

Who we are

The Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID) is a regional advocacy institution doing policy, campaigns and solidarity work to advocate for people-to-people solidarity through its peacebuilding and thematic work in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia.

Stay the swords, give peace a chance

A global conflict prevention network in Southeast Asia urged both the Philippine government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to exhaust all remedies available to resolve the crisis spawned by the unfortunate July 10 Basilan tragedy without necessarily shedding more bloodshed and destruction to properties in the process. The Southeast Asia Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (SEA GPPAC) called on the protagonists to find peaceful means, no matter how tedious it may be, as a civilized way to address the Basilan crisis. At the same time, it expressed grave concern over the fate of the civilians — especially the children, women, and the elderly — who are vulnerable if the peace and security situation will turn to worse.

Indonesia urged to extradite to Timor Leste senior army officer indicted for war crimes

The Asia Pacific Solidarity Coalition (APSOC), a regional solidarity organization that campaigns on issues affecting the peoples of the region, expresses its gravest concern over the continued presence of Col. Burhanuddin Siagian as commander of the Jayapura sub-regional military command (Korem 172) in West Papua. Siagian’s presence is not only a threat to legitimate human rights defenders and political activists in West Papua but it is also indicative of the Indonesian government’s insincerity in its avowed commitment to justice and the long overdue military reforms.

Preliminary Statement: Election Observation Mission in East Timor

We strongly salute and congratulate the people of Timor-Leste, who have overwhelmed us with their commitment to democracy. Despite many challenges, the Parliamentary Election has been carried out quite successfully. The process has strengthened this young nation’s institutions, and the relatively peaceful environment during the election period is a welcome change from the atmosphere after last year’s crisis. As the cycle of elections nears its conclusion, it is now up to all the political parties to respect the democratic wishes of the people for peace and a renewed focus on national development.
